The questions that separate quality deck contractors from the rest: What footing depth do you use in Boston? (Correct answer: 48 inches minimum, below the 42" frost depth.) How do you flash the ledger-to-house connection? (Correct answer: self-adhering flashing tape and/or aluminum flashing before the ledger goes on, with standoffs or drainage holes to prevent moisture trapping.) What lumber grade do you use for structural members? (Correct answer: #2 or better, grade-stamped.) What joist hanger do you use? Ask for references from deck projects completed in the past 12–18 months. Contact them and ask: Are there any structural issues? Did the deck pass inspection on first attempt? Massachusetts law requires a written contract for home improvement work over $1,000. The contract should specify: exact deck dimensions and layout, materials to be used (lumber grade, decking product, fastener type), permit responsibility, start and completion dates, total price and payment schedule, and warranty terms.
