How to Repair Large Holes in Drywall in Boston Homes

Small holes in drywall — nail holes, small impact damage — are straightforward spackling jobs. Large holes (bigger than about 4 inches) require a different approach that most homeowners and many contractors don't know. Here's how large drywall holes are properly repaired.

Why Large Holes Can't Just Be Spackled

Joint compound and spackle are not structural — they can't bridge a large gap and support themselves. Filling a large hole with compound directly results in the compound cracking, shrinking, and falling out as it dries because there's nothing behind it to support the fill. Proper repair of large holes requires backing — a substrate the compound can be applied to and that will hold the repair rigid. The backing approach depends on the hole size and location. The California Patch for Mid-Size Holes (4–8 Inches)

The California patch (also called the self-backing patch) cuts a piece of drywall slightly larger than the hole, scores the back, and snaps the gypsum core away from the paper on the edges, leaving a frame of paper facing that laps over the existing wall surface. The gypsum plug fills the hole, the paper flaps embed in compound on the existing wall surface, and the result is a solid backing for the repair with built-in tape. Three coats of compound, properly feathered and sanded, produce an invisible repair. This is our preferred method for holes in the 4–8 inch range in Boston homes. The Cut-and-Replace Method for Larger Holes

For holes larger than 8 inches, the correct approach is cutting the damage back to the nearest studs on each side and installing a full-width patch piece between the studs. This requires locating studs on either side of the damage, cutting a clean rectangle to the stud centers, cutting a patch piece to fit, screwing it to the studs, taping all four seams, and applying three coats of compound. The result is essentially a new section of drywall that's fully supported by the framing — as strong and solid as the original wall. Georgia-Pacific drywall products →

Making Large Repairs Invisible in Boston Homes

The most common reason large drywall repairs are visible after painting is skipping primer on the repair. Joint compound is highly porous and absorbs paint differently than the surrounding wall — painting directly over an unprimed repair creates flashing (shiny vs. flat areas) that's visible in certain lighting. Prime the entire repaired area with PVA primer or shellac-based primer before applying finish paint. On older Boston homes where walls have been painted many times, also match the surface texture — a smooth patch in an orange-peel textured wall is always visible. We match texture before priming on every drywall repair. Zinsser primer products →
