Mesh Tape vs. Paper Tape for Drywall: Which Is Better?

The debate between mesh and paper drywall tape has been going on for decades. Both have legitimate uses, and both produce failures when used in the wrong application. Here's the honest breakdown of when each is appropriate.

Paper Tape: Stronger for Most Applications

Paper tape embedded in joint compound is the industry standard for joints between drywall panels and for inside corners. When properly embedded — fully wet in compound with no air bubbles, no folding, no wrinkles — paper tape creates a joint that's as strong as the drywall itself. The key is proper embedding: the tape must be fully wet and fully in contact with the compound beneath it. Air bubbles under paper tape eventually produce ridges and bubbles on the wall surface that are visible through paint. Paper tape does not stretch, which means joints don't crack over time as the building moves seasonally. USG joint tape guide →

Mesh Tape: Faster but Weaker on Flat Joints

Self-adhesive fiberglass mesh tape is faster to apply — it sticks directly to the drywall surface without an initial bedding coat of compound. This makes it popular for repairs and patch work where speed matters. The problem: mesh tape provides less crack resistance than paper tape on flat joints. Mesh has open spaces that compound must bridge rather than embed into, which produces a weaker joint. In Boston's older buildings that experience more seasonal movement than new construction, mesh tape on flat joints is more likely to produce cracked joint lines over time. Where Mesh Tape Is Appropriate

Mesh tape performs well in one specific application: drywall repairs over cracks in plaster or existing drywall where the underlying crack may continue to move. The mesh's flexibility accommodates slight ongoing movement better than rigid paper tape in these situations. For cracks in plaster that have been stable for years, paper tape is fine. For cracks that have shown recent movement or that occur at building joints, mesh tape embedded in setting-type compound provides better crack resistance. Metal Corner Bead vs. Paper-Faced Corner Bead

Outside corners require corner bead — the question is metal vs. paper-faced. Metal corner bead is strong and provides a crisp, defined corner. Paper-faced corner bead (Strait-Flex, USG Beadex) is more flexible and forgiving on corners that aren't perfectly straight or square — common in older Boston homes. Paper-faced bead embedded in compound and finished like a flat joint produces excellent results and accommodates the slight irregularities that Boston's older buildings present. On renovation work in older Boston homes, we use paper-faced corner bead as a standard practice. NACHI drywall standards →
