Oil stains on Boston driveways are a common problem — especially in older neighborhoods where cars park in tight spaces and minor drips accumulate over years. Here's what actually works for oil stain removal and what doesn't.
Oil and grease are hydrophobic — they repel water. Standard pressure washing with water alone doesn't remove oil stains because water can't penetrate the oil to lift it from the concrete. High-pressure water pushes oil around rather than removing it, sometimes spreading a stain that was concentrated into a larger but thinner deposit. Effective oil stain removal requires a chemical process that breaks down the hydrocarbon molecules — either a degreaser that emulsifies the oil or an absorbent material that draws oil out of the concrete pores before washing. For fresh oil stains (less than a week old): apply a commercial degreaser (Simple Green Pro HD, Zep Concrete Cleaner, or industrial-grade sodium hydroxide cleaner) directly to the stain. Work it into the concrete with a stiff brush. Allow to dwell for 10–15 minutes — the degreaser needs time to penetrate and emulsify the oil. Then pressure wash at 2,500–3,000 PSI with a surface cleaner attachment to lift the emulsified oil. A single application removes most fresh stains. Heavy or old stains may require two or three applications. ICRI concrete cleaning standards →
Oil stains that have been in concrete for years have polymerized — the oil has partially cured into a harder deposit that's more resistant to degreaser alone. For old embedded stains, we use a combination approach: apply degreaser, let dwell overnight under plastic sheeting (extends contact time), brush aggressively, then apply a poultice of absorbent material (diatomaceous earth, kitty litter, or commercial concrete degreaser paste) to draw out the remaining oil as the poultice dries. Multiple applications may be needed for heavily stained areas. Complete removal of very old oil stains isn't always possible — we can significantly improve but may not achieve pristine results on 10-year-old deposits. PWNA cleaning techniques →
Cleaned oil-contaminated water must not discharge untreated to storm drains or surface water — it's an environmental violation. Boston's storm drains connect to the harbor watershed. We contain wash water from oil stain cleaning using berms and wet vacuums, and dispose of collected water appropriately. Property owners hiring contractors for driveway oil removal should confirm the contractor addresses this — improper discharge is a liability that falls on the property owner as well as the contractor.
