Closet Installation in Boston

What Closet System Is Best for Boston Condos and Apartments?

Storage is one of the most consistent complaints Boston condo dwellers have — older buildings weren't designed for modern wardrobes. Upgrading closet systems is one of the highest-value-per-dollar improvements in a Boston condo.

The Boston Closet Problem

Pre-1960 Boston buildings were designed with single hanging rod and shelf closets — appropriate for the wardrobes of the era. A typical triple-decker bedroom closet is 4–5 feet wide and 24 inches deep. The standard wire shelf and rod system that occupies most of these spaces uses only 20–30% of available vertical space. Converting these closets to double-hang with shelving above and drawer units at the base can triple usable storage without changing the closet dimensions. ClosetMaid storage systems →

Modular vs. Built-In Systems

Modular systems (ClosetMaid, IKEA PAX, California Closets' modular line) assemble from standard components and install in a day. They're adjustable, relatively inexpensive ($500–$2,000 for a typical bedroom closet), and adequate for most applications. The limitation is that standard component sizes don't always optimize available space — a 5'2" closet divided into 24" modules wastes the remainder.

Built-in custom carpentry produces the most efficient use of space and the best finish, but costs significantly more: $2,000–$6,000 for a primary bedroom closet. In Boston condos where storage space is genuinely constrained, the premium is justified. We build custom closet systems in painted MDF or birch plywood that fit the exact dimensions of the space and include the specific organization features that work for the homeowner's actual wardrobe. Walk-In Closet Conversions in Boston

Boston's older buildings frequently have bedrooms with multiple smaller closets rather than one walk-in. Converting two adjacent smaller closets by removing the partition wall creates a functional walk-in. This requires a building permit (structural wall removal), but the storage improvement is dramatic. We've done this conversion in Brighton, Brookline, and Newton condos where two 3-foot closets become one 6-foot walk-in with room for a full organization system on both sides. Cedar Lining for Boston Closets

Cedar-lined closets provide natural moth deterrence and a pleasant scent useful in Boston's older buildings where storage spaces can develop musty odors from humidity. Cedar is not a substitute for moisture control — a musty closet needs humidity addressed, not masked — but in closets with good moisture control, cedar lining is a nice upgrade. We install cedar panels as part of closet build-outs when requested. The aromatic Eastern red cedar species is most effective; Western red cedar provides a milder scent.
