Deck Staining Across Greater Boston
Massachusetts freeze-thaw cycles are the worst thing that happens to a wood deck every year. Water gets into the grain, freezes, expands, and starts splitting the wood. Decks that aren't properly maintained with penetrating stain and sealer start showing real damage within 3-4 years. We've restored decks across Needham, Wayland, Newton, and Dedham that homeowners thought were done for — proper cleaning, prep, and quality stain brings most of them back.
Deck Staining Services Across Greater Boston
We stain and seal wood decks of all sizes across Greater Boston and MetroWest. Pressure-treated lumber, cedar, redwood, composite (select products), and exotic hardwoods. We strip old stain if needed, clean and brighten the wood, make minor repairs, and apply penetrating stain that gets into the grain and protects from the inside out.
Penetrating Stain vs. Film-Forming Products
There's an important distinction in deck products. Film-forming finishes (solid stains, paints) sit on top of the wood and eventually peel. Penetrating semi-transparent stains soak into the wood grain and protect from within — they don't peel, they just fade gradually. For most Boston-area decks, we recommend penetrating semi-transparent or semi-solid stains over solid colors for exactly this reason.
Products We Use
Armstrong Clark, Benjamin Moore Arborcoat, and Defy Extreme are our primary deck stain lines — all penetrating formulas with strong water repellency and UV protection designed for New England conditions.
Deck Prep Before Staining
Clean wood takes stain. Dirty, gray, mildewed wood doesn't. We pressure wash, apply wood brightener to open the grain and remove gray oxidation, let it dry fully, make any repairs, then apply stain in the right conditions. Staining over wet wood or in direct sun causes adhesion failure — we schedule around weather carefully.
