What Are Fascia Boards?

Fascia boards are the horizontal boards that run along the lower edge of the roof, connecting the roof rafters and providing a surface for gutters to attach to. They're constantly exposed to moisture from rain, ice dams, and gutter overflow — making them one of the most rot-prone areas on a Boston home.

Signs of Fascia Rot

Paint peeling repeatedly in the same spot. Dark staining or discoloration. Soft or spongy wood when you press it. Visible gaps or separation at joints. Gutters pulling away from the house. Any of these signs warrant a closer look — small areas of rot spread to adjacent wood quickly if left untreated.

Repair vs. Replacement

Minor surface rot (less than 25% of the board's depth) can sometimes be treated with epoxy consolidant and filler — a durable repair that bonds well with paint. More extensive rot requires replacing the board entirely. We use pressure-treated lumber or PVC fascia board for replacements — both are more moisture-resistant than standard pine and will outlast the original material. The Massachusetts State Building Code requires that wood in contact-prone areas meet certain rot resistance standards.
